Red Envelopes/hóngbāo

In Chinese tradition, slender red envelopes are not only for holding new year lucky money, which serves to ward off evil spirits, but also to convey fest wishes, which is the true significance of red envelopes. What I try to create, is a work that can add more meaning and creativity to this traditional and meaningful custom.

This red envelope series is composed of four designs: namely, Fúlù”(Fortune & prosperity),“Fùguì”(wealth)and“Jíxiáng”(auspicious),“Rúyì”(all wishes come true). These four Chinese phrases all convey warm and friendly meanings and represent good wishes. The designs incorporated elements of traditional lucky symbols, including ancient Chinese copper coins, peony, auspicious cloud and Taiji (Supreme Ultimate), into the representation of Chinese characters. From the characters themselves, the embedded ideas can be visually observed, which is the most direct way to express ideas. And I hope the receivers can feel the deep and sincere wishes as soon as they are given the envelopes.
